We love displaying different products and wears at Makeshift in our rotating pop-up space. It’s a great way to introduce new brands to our members, and the public, as well as offering brick and mortar space to online retailers. This months’ curated shop is from Rare Device. Although they have a shop over on Divisadero Street, they wanted to bring some of their goods to Makeshift Society.

One person* will receive free full-time access to the Clubhouse for three months. The Maker-in-Residence can take advantage of both the physical space plus the communal resources at hand. In exchange, they work on a project of their choosing, documenting their progress through our Pinterest account or blog. At the end of the residency, they conduct a lecture to the membership about their project.

Apply now; the application period ends June 5, 2013.

*We reserve the right to have more than one Maker-in-Residence at a time, in exceptional circumstances

As most of you know, the class is wildly popular. It sells out quick, and Maybelle has graciously offered to teach another class on Saturday June 22 from 1-3.

Register now before it’s too late!

I recently launched the SF Postcard Project, which aims to encourage neighborhood exploration through community exchange.

I chose Bayview as the first SF neighborhood to participate in the project. Bayview is tucked into an isolated Southeast corner of San Francisco. Most San Franciscans don’t have a reason to go there. They only know what they see on the news — violence, drugs, and poverty. But there is much more.

This project aims to collect and share positive places in Bayview. I ask a Bayview resident to fill out their favorite place on a postcard and then mail the postcard to a randomly selected San Francisco resident in another neighborhood. The goal is to make someone in another SF neighborhood think about the Bayview, if only for a few moments. Who knows — maybe they are so intrigued they take a trip to Bayview and check it out for themselves.

“Like” the SF Postcard Project facebook page to stay up-to-date!

Join us to uncover the basics of custom upholstery for your next DIY home project on May 23rd, then explore regional Italian cheeses with our favorite cheese monger on May 30th. The grand finale on June 13th will include a cocktail-infused lesson on bitters, plus learn trades secrets from our seasoned bartender. Every workshop will include conversation and lots of not-to-be-missed skills!

This past weekend, we were host to two fun-filled events. Saturday started Enjoy Events Co.‘s It’s None of Your Business (Yes It Is) workshop. It was a two day class that covered all things wedding planning. On the first day, the ladies at Enjoy, Meg & Emily, provided useful tips and information on starting and establishing a business. Dynomo Donuts were provided to get the day started right (yum!) There was an offsite visit as well as guest speakers, including Anne Sage of The City Sage blog.

On the second day they went more in depth with scheduling, budgeting, and day to day activity of running an event company, but not before serving mimosas! They even brought in their own banquet tables and place settings to discuss different budgets. Myka from Modern Sequins was the guest speaker and provided a stunning DIY tablescape.

Following the workshop, we had a great evening with TableTribes‘ Picnic event. They are based out of Washington D.C. and hosted their first picnic in SF on Sunday night. Their mission is to ”use food and drink as a vehicle to increase the number of meaningful interactions in our lives. The goal is to facilitate authentic relationships based on shared core values by connecting people via face-to-face conversations.”

The night started with crafted drinks and asian inspired food. They brought in a local chef and Fair, a fair trade liquor company, to do the bar tending. After everyone was well feed, a discussion was started among the attendees on the topic of happiness. Guest collaborators started the conversation. They are from San Francisco and are familiar with happiness and how to maintain it in a world that has gone digital.

Our friends from Warby Parker stopped by recently on their cross country class trip. If you’re unfamiliar with who they are, Warby Parker are a super cool, super affordable eyeglass company (prescription, non-prescription, and sunglasses) out of NYC. They set off on their whirlwind tour of the country back in October to bring their showroom to the masses. Their flagship store just opened in Manhattan this past weekend. We are loving the classic library motif of the shop and how fun is it that they have a photo booth in store? We hope they open one up here on the West coast soon! They will be stationed in San Francisco for a little while longer, so if your in the Bay Area I’d suggest getting over to visit their yellow school bus ASAP!

When they popped into Makeshift Society last week, they brought with them an array of their glasses. Rena tried on a few and they snapped some pictures. You can view the rest of the photos and their post on Makeshift here.

Last night, they came back to hold a small event with Byliner. Drinks and conversation were plenty and a lot of fun was had. Going off of the library theme of their store and school bus interior, professors library, they brought cool props for photo booth style shots (think tweed jackets, pipes, and fedoras!) We were glad to have them and can not wait to get a pair, or two, of their chic glasses.
